The band’s name might suggest that singer Frederike Schonis plays the leading role, but that’s a misconception. With Albert van Dorssen on piano and Juan van Emmerloot on drums, the trio is perfectly balanced. Also featured on TEN—whose title refers to the collective’s tenth anniversary—are Rolf Delfos and Ferdi Lancee, among others. It’s a delightful album to listen to, radiating positivity, perseverance, and creativity. Since every artist is unique, you’d rather not pigeonhole their music, but to give you an idea: think of a combination of US West Coast, a bit of Zero 7 even, and Steely Dan. With influences from jazz and soul, at times so swinging that it seems as if Quincy Jones had a hand in directing it from music heaven. TEN offers not ten, but eleven truly wonderful songs. The common thread: “Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but about learning to dance in the rain.” A wise life lesson. And Frederike’s voice never gets boring.
